The Silver Buffalo Award was created in 1925. It is bestowed upon those who give truly noteworthy and extraordinary service to youth. This award, Scouting's highest commendation, recognizes the invaluable contributions that outstanding American men and women render to youth. The service must be national in character and can be directly connected with the BSA or independent of the movement.

The first Silver Buffalo Award was conferred upon Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting movement and Chief Scout of the World. The second went to the unknown scout who helped in the London fog. Mr. Boyce was so impressed that he sought out Baden-Powell, learned of the Boy Scouts, and in 1910, helped bring scouting to the United States of America.

This is the only award, other than the Silver World, that can be presented to a recipient that is not a member of the BSA. Professional Scouters are eligible for this award.
