Community Organization Award 2010 - 13

K-C11c-PB2010, purple medium twill back cloth, computer embroidery, gold red knot, gold border, molded plastic back with 2010 Anniversary logo.

In recent years, representatives of several national chartered organizations have inquired about the development of a recognition which could be given to registered adult leaders in units chartered in community organizations; similar to the adult religious awards presented by the various denominations and faith groups. After study and evaluation , the BSA National Court of Honor approved the concept of a Community Organization Award square knot. This square knot would be available to be worn by uniformed Scouter's who have been recognized for their service to Scouting youth in the community.

As of February 5, 2007, there are ten awards that fall into this classification.

  • Marvin M. Lewis Award of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks (BPOE);
  • Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award;
  • Veterans of Foreign War Scouter's Achievement Award;
  • American Legion Scouting Square Knot Award;
  • Department of Defense - United States Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal;
  • Herbert G. Horton Alpha Phi Omega Youth Service Award of the Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity;
  • Cliff Dochterman Award of the International Rotarians Fellowship of Scouting;
  • Ruritan National Scout Leader Service Award of the Ruritan National Service Club;
  • Raymond A. Finly Sea Scout Service Award of the U.S. Power Squadron;
  • Geroge Meany Award of the American Federation of the Labor & Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). This is part of this category, but retained the use of the original square knot designed for the Meany award.

Community Organization Award is a generic term used by the BSA to identify a category of awards used by secular, national, oor community organizations to recognize their members for voluntary service and achievement. The organization must also be a BSA national chartered organization.

This knot resembles the William H. Spurgeon III Award knot. The background color is purple, while the Spurgeon knot is olive green/black.
